Imbolc Brighid's Day or Candlemas

How To Celebrate Imbolc Like A Goddess

It’s just about IMPOSSIBLE for me to pick a favorite Sabbat, they are all so beautiful and rich in symbolism and tradition… but Imbolc is so very special for so many reasons. Imbolc marks winter’s retreat when the very earliest signs of spring begin to appear…

The buds on trees and shrubs begin to swell, hardy bulbs like crocus and snowdrops shoot leaves of green up and out of a thawing earth … and although it’s as still cold as witches titties (and snowing) across most of the Northern Hemisphere … the days have begun to lengthen and it’s light out for longer each day.

Imbolc (also known as Candlemas) falls on February 2nd or when the sun is at 15 degrees in Aquarius. So, I invite you to celebrate Imbolc like a goddess by refreshing your home, altar or sacred space with seasonal items – it’s time, spring is less than 7 weeks away!

Some Inspiration For Your Home, Sacred Space Or Altar:

  • Fill a vase full of freshly cut pussy-willow, forsythia or witch hazel branches.
  • Buy or fill a planter with springtime bulbs (daffodil, tulips or hyacinth).
  • Work with the goddesses of Imbolc: Virgin or maiden goddesses, the Goddess as a child; Brigit, Aradia, Athena, Gaia, Ianna Februa, or Hestia.
  • Work with the gods of Imbolc: Gods of fire, the God as a young man or child, love or fertility gods, Pan, Aengus Og, Eros, Februus, or Faunus.
  • Work with Imbolc gemstones such as amethyst, bloodstone, garnet, onyx, ruby and turquoise.
  • Light 5 candles (to represent the 4 cardinal elements plus Spirit) that are the color white to symbolize the fallen snow and the coming of the light…  or 1 white and 1 yellow candle to symbolize both light and the sun. You can leave them lit all day or just light them during the evening on Imbolc. As you light them, mindfully welcome the light into your life and your spirit… open your heart-space as wide as possible to receive this light. You can also light dark green candles (to represent Brigit’s green cloak) or baby blue candles (to represent the sky).
  • Make a Brigit’s Cross (sun cross) made from straw or reed. Learn how to make one here.
  • Work magically with herbs such as rosemary or bay leaves. I have a sprig of rosemary in a bud vase on my altar and in a few days time it has already grown ROOTS -talk about robust!
  • Make seasonal food offerings to Source such as onions, leeks, shallots, raisins.
  • And … anything else that feels intuitively right to you… magic is an art – create it from your vision!

Some Practical Magic Ideas:

  • Eat whole foods that are in season such as Arugula, Asparagus, Beets, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Celery, Cilantro, Clementines, Dill, Fennel, Grapefruit, Kale, Lemons, Lettuce, Leeks, Oranges, Onions, Parsnips, Pears, Shallots, Sweet Potatoes, Tangelos, Tangerines, Turnips and Rhubarb.
  • Go out into nature and look for signs of life beginning to stir on trees: swelling buds on branches. You can even gather some branches and buds and bring them into your home, arranging them with lighter or brighter colored gemstones such as white, yellow, clear, or green to create a simple and sacred altar space that honors the coming of spring.
  • Make self-care a priority; get massages, rest more and go to sleep by 11pm. Take a lovely purifying bath or shower with sea salt and rosemary (either in the water or in the corner of the shower space). Visualize the release of anything that no longer serves you leaving your body and your mind as you prepare fertile ground within you for what will grow in the coming months.
  • Slow down and enjoy the last few weeks of hibernation, you have a busy year of growth and expansion ahead! May the quiet beauty of the season bless you and yours as the Great Wheel Of The Year turns towards spring.
